East Coast tradition comes to the West Coast

A new tradition gets its start in Victoria when the cast of Saltwater Theater Productions’ holiday show knocks on the door and asks, “Any mummers ‘llowed in?”

Mummers Masque is an ode to the English holiday tradition of mummering – when holiday revelers (called mummers) roam door-to-door dressed in disguise, offering amusement and entertainment in the form of music, dance and a play. Typically, at the end of a performance, they’re offered a hot, stiff drink, Christmas cake and a chance to reveal their identities, before moving along to the next “stage.”

I'm heels over head in love with CRUSH

SEXY SAVVY and FUN ENTERTAINMENT

CRUSH at the touch of love everyone becomes a poet

Phoebe Rumsey, Choreographer has been working her magic in rehearsals with fellow dancers Stacy Sanderson and Leigh Machnee. Last week she happily announced that the choreography was complete! In watching preliminary rehearsals for CRUSH,  I observed Phoebe’s innate sense of style & comedic flair shining through in every dance number. I marvelled at how the dance choreography immediately brings character and text to life through dance. And the dance element integrated with committed text and powerful vocals transformed something ordinary into something extraordinary. At Saltwater, we aspire to bring the creative arts together and are always eager to integrate poetry, music and dance to embellish, extend and enlarge existing emotions. We are excited to collaborate on programs like CRUSH and share them with the arts community in Victoria.

Side By Side By Sondheim is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI

Stephen Sondheim is the most acclaimed composer on Broadway. He has won eight Tony Awards (more than any other composer), eight Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize and an Oscar.

His phenomenal legacy includes lyrics for the musicals West Side Story and Gypsy, as well as music and lyrics for Follies, Company, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and Sweeney Todd.

Side By Side By Sondheim is a celebration of Mr Sondheim’s earlier work in landmark shows that revolutionised musical theatre. This wonderful production celebrates some of his best known works including Send In The Clowns, Broadway Baby, Losing My Mind and Being Alive as well as featuring songs from West Side Story and Gypsy.

The original production of Side By Side By Sondheim began in London in 1976 to overwhelming success, where it ran for four years.

The Broadway production opened in 1977, and enjoyed an incredible run of 390 performances – largely unprecedented for a simple revue. The show started a trend for sophisticated revues that persists today.
